Spread 0076 – Graffiti Journal – The Last Page.

Vintage and personal papers and images, Acrylic paint, black and white

gesso. Tim Holtz Ink, Liquitex Gloss Medium Varnish.

15 April 2012

The last page of a journal gives me mixed feelings, happiness, sadness, accomplishment and excitement for the next journal and the next spread. To me it is important to include a current photo and to document where I am in the present moment. This is a documentation of my journey in my journal and my artistic life. Always mindful of my past and moving forward in the present. On to the next journal and the next adventure. Thank you for joining me.

“The Way You Talk To Me”

Vintage and personal papers, Acrylic paint, ink, Sigano white gel pen.

January 15, 2012

I find it interesting that those that are the closest to us can be the most cruel. Listen to the way you talk to those you love. Our words can be powerful. Choose them kindly and gently.

Spread 0074 – “Emerging Man”

April 01, 2012

Montana acrylic spray paint, Adirondack color sprays, Sigano white gel pens.

I have been asked how do I do what I do? Where does it come from? My answer. I practice. A little at a time. I do this daily. I do the work. I listen deeply. I am quiet. It took tears, time, frustration, mostly time and patience. I don’t come by this naturally, but slowly with time it comes. It is an emergence.

I think I am really going to enjoy these new Pantalic journals they fit perfectly on a scanner and are thinner, quicker to fill up. Oh the possibilities times 2! Can’t wait to dig in! These two journals were made on a sunny Saturday in my favorite journaling spot, my back yard surrounded by my garden.

Enjoy, as always click on the image for a larger view.

Spread 0071 – “Abstract”

Acrylic paint, ink.

Things are not always clear, nor do they always fit neatly in a box. I remember in my youth I did not understand abstract art. Time changes everything.

Spread 0070 – “Earth/Sky”

Tape, vintage papers and personal papers, acrylic paint, Adirondack color wash sprays, black gel pens, Sigano white gel pens.

03 March, 2012.

You will always find in my art something grungy, this comes from my father. You will also always find something of nature and this comes from my mother. When I was very young my father would take me to junk yards, I always loved rusty, crusty things with history and patina. As I have said before I have been out in the garden from as far back as I could remember. From my mother I get my love of nature, the outdoors, water, plants, earth. It is all me, it is all in here. It is in everything I do. And I love it.

Graffiti Journal Cover

 Sept 05 2009 to March 21, 2012.

Spray Paint, Stickers, Press on numbers, Krill Paint, Sharpie poster paint pens, Signao Gel pens, Stabilo Woody pencils, Montana Acrylic paint markers, Sharpie China markers.

Here is another visual journal cover. It may never be “finished” but here it is in the present moment. I started working on it back in 2009, I left that journal a while I worked on my XL Moleskine journal. It is actually a Papaya – Sabrina Ward Harrison journal, I don’t even think you can purchase them any longer. I have another one, I tend to purchase journals in duplicate so I can have one to work in while the other dries, you can view the other cover in this post here. I like my covers to evolve over time, I like to think of them as a preview or a tease as to what is inside. I add little bits and paint and images here and there as I go along, every mark, image, phrase has meaning to me. I still have about six blank spread pages inside but I think the cover is about as done as it gets. It is currently 72 degrees here in Long Beach and yes the sun is out and I am headed outside to play in this journal in my favorite spot on my patio table. Who knows where I’ll go. Enjoy your day.

Spread 0068 – Hockey Fan

18 March, 2012

Hockey tickets, vintage and personal papers, acrylic paint, ink, black and white gel pens.

It is always interesting to me to find out new things about myself. Becoming a hockey fan is a surprising recent discovery for me. I am not much of a sports fan. Growing up my mother and brothers thought me odd for not joining in their liking of football and basketball. My father and I did not enjoy sports but would go along, so I watched the crowd. I found group sports dull and boring. In my youth I prefered solitary sports myself, skiing, running, which gave me time to think.

I must admit my partner has had a big hand in my new-found love of hockey. He has long been a hockey fan and I sort of absorbed it by going to games with him. We’ve enjoyed season tickets this year at the Los Angeles Kings. It sort of snuck up and surprised me how passionate I am for the sport. It is the skill I enjoy, your skating on ice, hitting a tiny puck around the ice – not easy. Well also must admit I do enjoy watching those men out there on the ice. It is almost playoff season and the players all grow beards during the playoffs.

I have been enjoying a rainy weekend here in Los Angeles, doodling in my journal is so meditative and contemplative. Soothing, retrospective, which I like. Back to it. Enjoy your weekend.

“I Am A Tree”

Vintage and personal images, vintage papers, paint, Adirondack Color Wash Sprays, white and black gel pens, Sharpie poster paint pens.

03 March, 2012

I have always been connected to the earth. To dirt, plants, animals. Growing up on a farm in Montana we had a huge garden, cows, pigs, cats and dogs. My earliest memories are of my Mom plopping me in the middle of our huge vegetable garden in the earth. I remember the feel of the cool earth in my hands and bare feet, the rich smell of the dirt. It is deep in my genes. I have a cherished photo of my maternal great grandparents who were farmers outside their farm.

As a teen I resented the constant cycle of planting, tending, harvesting fruits and vegetables. I remember when I was a teenager telling my Mom “I will NEVER have a garden when I grow up.” Yet the first thing I do when I move into a house is plant a garden of some sort. I have to. I have to feel the earth in my hands. To nest, to have animals. It is the same with art. I have to use my hands. I have to feel the paper, the paint against my skin.

This spread is from one of Orly Avineri’s wonderful classes. As always click on the image to see a full size image.

I am currently in Portland, Oregon soaking up the yummy food and urban vibe.

Cheers!
