Spread 0166 – Internal Artifacts

6 April 2013

Vintage and personal papers, maps, paint chips, handmade papers, Nova color acrylic paints, matte medium, black Micron pen.

When I was young my mother looked at one of my art drawings and casually said to me “Brian, your just not as artistic as your brother and sister.” I took this statement in. In my young mind I heard it as the truth, it came from my mother it must be correct. I allowed that statement to halt my artistic expression. I did not even try after that. It was not until years later, in my thirties a college professor and and then again in my forties that Orly took the time and encouragement to help me truly feel I am an artist.

This is why I create and this is why I teach. We are ALL creative. We are ALL artists. Slowly we unlearn these incorrect messages. We are all creative beings.

I am teaching two new one day classes in Los Angeles at MAKE ART IN L.A. hosted by Barbara Buckles.

Finding Yourself – Join us for a day of exploration to discover YOUR style in art journaling. Working with copies of childhood and/or family photos and other images you feel a connection to such as a tree, a chair, or other special object(s), we’ll use paint, paper, pens, markers, found objects, and image transfer techniques to enhance your layouts. This workshop is all about developing and exploring your unique voice through style, color, image, and words. For everyone, all skill levels.

Men Only – Gentlemen, join us for a day of journaling through paint and collage. Art journaling is private; it’s just for you. It’s not about outcome; it’s about the process of creating to express yourself. For beginning and seasoned artists alike.

Finding Yourself – Saturday, July 12, 2014 – 10:30-4:30 – $100

For Men Only – Saturday, July 19, 2014 – 10:30-4:30 – $100

MAKE ART IN L.A. is a wonderful new teaching venue in The Loft at Liz’s, located upstairs above Liz’s Antique Hardware, 453 S. La Brea Avenue, Los Angles, CA 90036.

apaperbear - April 12, 2014

Aren’t all the pages we do a bit autobiographical?

5. Seth - April 14, 2014

Have been having so many conversations with people lately about early life experiences and feedback over art that shut them down — until much later in life, they opened up. Glad to see you let the artist in you out for the world to see!

Wish I could be at both of your workshops. One day!

6. BubbleArt - April 14, 2014

I heard basically the same comments as a child, and it has affected me my entire life. I am turning 50 this weekend, and I decided it was time to make my own truth.
Wish I lived in LA so I could take your class.
Personally, I love your journal art!

apaperbear - May 4, 2014

I am so glad you found art journaling. It would be wonderful to have you in my class.

BubbleArt - May 4, 2014

That’s a long way from home. I will be there in spirit!

7. Patricia Lacroix - May 8, 2014

Great page Brian. I wish I lived closer. Your ‘Finding Yourself’ course sounds like something I’d love to take. I never thought of using some of my childhood photos in my journal… going to give that one a go.

apaperbear - May 8, 2014

Patricia I use photocopies of my photos.

Patricia Lacroix - May 8, 2014

Yes, I would too. Those are too precious to use an original ;))
