Artistcellar TEXTures2 – Miro & Picasso set, moulding paste, Tim Holtz Adirondack sprays, Nova Color Acrylic paint.

One of the wonderful things about our community of artists is how open and giving they are. My friend Jill K. Berry asked me to participate some months ago in a blog hop and to create some artwork using her wonderful new stencis to promote Jill’s new collaboration with Artistcellar on  “Artistcellar Signature Series Stencils by Jill K Berry” - “TEXTures 2″. The stencils are a wondeful blend of Jill’s “Calligraphy and mapmaking blend in abstracted calligraphic journeys inspired by legendary artists and quotes that serve as inspirations for Jill’s work. All designs 6″ x 6″.” The stencils can be found here or http://www.artistcellar.com/stampstencil/acSignatureSeries.html. The artwork above was created using Jill’s new stencils.

If you would like to check out the other particpating artists in the blog hop check them out here:

Brian — I love the layering and color combinations you used in your spread. The stenciling adds great pops of color, and it keeps me looking and finding more depth and layering. Love it.

2. createsumzing - December 10, 2013

Ooo, the texture is cool! I checked out some of the stencils. It’s nice how clicking on the stencil image shows an example of how it was used.

And that face on the right page? It’s like he’s mean muggin’ and wants revenge on somebody. Dang.

3. chel1974 - December 10, 2013

I would absolutely use them in my acrylic paintings. Your work with these stencils is AMAZING- so inspiring. That beautiful texture photo made me gasp out loud!

I really like what you did with the stencils. More inspiration.

6. Terry Garrett - December 10, 2013

Brian I do like stencils- I use to worry that they were someone made by someone else so it wouldn’t be authentic of me to use them…I have used stencils in teaching Gelli printing and they incredible creative use of stencils never ceases to blow me away- your use is further proof that stencils can be used in a personal way.

7. John - December 10, 2013

23. Lori - December 11, 2013

Love the richness of color and the depth of your pieces…

24. upstatelisa - December 11, 2013

I might use the stamps to mono print on fabric!

25. Carina - December 11, 2013

I use stencils different ways, sometimes they are background texture in a mixed media piece, other times they take a more front row seat, often in smaller pieces like postcards and ATCs.

26. susan berkowitz - December 11, 2013

I really love these stencils. I work with words, deal in words, live with words (I’m a speech-language pathologist) and love incorporating them into my art in subtle ways. These are great!

27. Stephanie Pedersen - December 11, 2013

These stencils are great for adding texture. I would use them in one of several ways: using some spray inks with them to leave some virtual texture, using them with molding paste to leave actual texture, or using them with pan pastels to leave some subtle textural markings! Very excited about them! =D

28. Wendy Erman - December 11, 2013

I always forget about molding paste.! I’m going to have to dig some out of my stash and play!

29. Cheryl - December 11, 2013

Oh my, oh my, oh my…simply an amazing piece of art. And those stencils are incredible. So, after lusting after. gelli plate for months, I finally bought one. I hate to confess, but it is still sitting in its original packaging. Sadly, my current stash of stencils isn’t inspiring me to crack open this new toy. However, THESE fabulous and really exciting stencils would probably have me doing monoprints way past my bedtime. Oh ,yes, and I’d used them here and there in my visual journal…also, with some modeling paste, tar gel…sooooooo many possibilities.

30. Vicki - December 11, 2013

Great work here, Brian. The colors and textures are delicious!

31. Christine - December 11, 2013

34. Monica - December 11, 2013

I just want to say these journal spreads are AMAZING! Brian, your work always fascinates me with its rich, dense texture and your use of color is so JUICY! The way you have incorporated the stencils into your work has really enhanced your style – seeing your work is making me anxious to unpack my art supplies and return to art making! I think I will tackle unpacking my art studio TODAY, and leave the rest of my new home for the weekend ;) Thanks for the inspiration Brian!

35. freebirdsings - December 11, 2013

I love how you used the stencil to get the texture on the ATC. I would like to get some of these stencils to use as partial stenciling on pages for added interest or all over a page to blend the background colors. I hadn’t seen these stencils before Jill shared them.

36. claudia trevithick - December 11, 2013

I seem to be comment-challenged. My last wasn’t posted. I am interested in the 3 dimensional aspect//impressions. It seems like the stencils are elevated. How is this done?

37. Hobby - December 11, 2013

I like to use stencils (esp. like these from Jill’s work) in my art journals and mixed media paintings as backgrounds and for detail work on various papers for collage. Good luck to everyone and thanks for the blog hop! ~Hobby

48. Nathalie - December 14, 2013

Dear Brian
When Seth Apter released his new book (The mixed-media artist) last october, you left a comment about my art that made me incredibly happy.
I have so much work at the hospital right now, so many night shifts and my two daughter’s need so much attention that I didn’t find time to thank you yet.
But today, I finally sat down and wrote a note to everyone of you.
I wish I could answer to every comment that’s been left on my blog since I started it and thank everyone who ‘faved’ an art journal page on my flickr account but if I want to have time left to paint in my journal, it is simply impossible.
That’s also the reason why I don’t have a facebook account, I don’t tweet or never wander on pinterest and all the other gorgeous photo-sharing websites.
Anyway, I am grateful for all the kind words you’ve left. You cannot imagine what a support they are.
Glad to be in the book with you!

49. Karen Leigh - December 14, 2013

57. Jane - December 15, 2013

Well, I think I would do my background in shades of purples and aquas and use the stencils with white pearl or similar paint and maybe use some molding paste for dimensions and then I will have to leave it to my imagination as to what else I would put on it. I am all excited and love the opportunity to win the stencil set. Thanks for your creative inspiration.
